[toggle title=”Bridging the Divide – Developing Effective Recruitment Strategies for ONYX Chapters”]ONYX is a Leather Fraternity for Gay and Bisexual Men of Color. But, how do we effectively recruit other races into our chapters to increase the racial and cultural diversity of our brotherhood? When we use the term “people of color”, we assume readers will understand this to be inclusive of all ethnic backgrounds. History has shown this isn’t the case. On numerous occasions the response has been, “I thought ONYX was for black men only.” We must be proactive about actively recruiting all racial groups into our ONYX chapters regionally and nationwide. How do we engage Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, Native American Gay Men, or any minority to pledge ONYX? During this workshop, we will discuss the intersections of race and cultural backgrounds, and how to develop an effective recruitment strategy for each of our chapter’s jurisdictions. Inclusion begins at home. Let us begin, together, in brotherhood.
Presented by Migs ONYX[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Can I Be Freaky and Mentally Healthy?”]In mental health terms, much of what we describe as “freaky” is called a “paraphilia’ (i.e., sexual interest in and sexual arousal from an activity that does not involve genital stimulation or preparatory fondling of the genitals). Over the last 20 years or so, how the mental health professions have come to understand the ‘paraphilias’ has evolved enormously, mostly due to the work of groups like the Coalition for Sexual Freedom and individual psychiatrists, psychologists and others who have focused their life’s work on increasing our understanding of human sexuality. We are now at a point where a paraphilia is not a sign of mental illness in and of itself. However, when it causes subjective distress or results in negative consequences, it is then, in fact, labeled as a mental disorder. This lecture/discussion will describe the paraphilias (for example, sexual sadism, etc.); the various factors that make them mentally healthy or unhealthy; and how to incorporate this knowledge into our efforts to be the most mentally healthy “freaks” that we can be.
Presented by Daddy Richard[/toggle]
